"I just don't feel seen" People in Sheffield tell us what ADHD support they need

VAS, SAPN, and Sheffield Voices worked together on a six-month project to learn what kind of support people of all ages in Sheffield need to live well with ADHD.

We wanted to hear from people about their experiences and what could help them or those they care about.

By sharing our connections through SAPN and Sheffield Voices, our knowledge of health and social care systems, and our experiences with community involvement, we created an online survey and held some face-to-face sessions to gather people’s opinions and feedback.

People from the ADHD community in Sheffield then helped us analyse the data, and we used their interpretations to shape our findings.

Recommendations from what we heard about can also be found at the end of this report, which can be downloaded at the link above.

  1. Hi. I feel it is somewhat difficult sometimes to maintain employment and look for further employment. I work in the NHS and I have been constantly told there are recruitment freezes, ”they pay more in a supermarket stacking shelves” and ”there is no money”. I find all these messages confusing especially as I want to do well for myself.

I was on a year long waiting list via Right to Choose for ADHD medication as I had been diagnosed in Rotherham a long time ago and even the medication that I started on made me anxious and within the day of first starting it, I had to call 111. I am extremely sensitive to medication and can only take Amitriptyline which is actually making me a bit dizzy so I am getting the GP to call me back for this.

As you can imagine, it is a minefield and exhausting.

ADHD leaves me in a ”freeze” state sometimes and the inability to decide what to do on any one day which leaves me missing out on a lot of things.

    Thanks
